EXPLORE SOUTH AFRICA TASTING @PROWEIN 2016
The tasting area at ProWein has proved to be is hugely popular over the past four years. This area is aimed at attracting key decision makers visiting the fair including monopoly buyers, influential media, key trade and acclaimed international sommeliers. The focus for ProWein 2016 is to showcase South Africa’s unique stories and history through the application of specified themes.
There will be a total of 6 pods in the tasting zone, whereby a changeover will occur at midday allowing for a total of 12 themes to be highlighted during the three days of the show. There are 12 wines per pod resulting in a total of 120 wines being showcased per day. Submissions are open to all producers therefore not restricted to companies exhibiting at ProWein.
Below are the HIGHLIGHTED themes:
1 | Chenin Blanc: Highlighting the quality of Chenin Blanc being produced in South Africa along with versatility offered through a variety of styles, complexity and depth. Only wines with at least 85 % of a single varietal maybe be submitted under the below themes.

2 | Pinotage: We would like to showcase the wide range of styles developed through different viniculture and viniculture techniques. Only wines with at least 85 % of a single varietal maybe be submitted under the below themes.

3 | Celebrate our diversity: This theme will showcase the ethical trade progression and transformation achieved by the South African wine industry with the growth of Black Owned / BEE, Fairtrade and WIETA wine brands.

4 | White Blends: Here we would like to focus on innovation behind South Africa’s white blends through the use of unconventional varieties. This includes white blends where there is no more than 80% of one variety. Excluding: Bordeaux or Rhone inspired blends.

5 | Red Blends: Showcasing South Africa’s ingenuity through the creation of red blends. The focus for this pod will be on unique unusual blend offerings. This includes red blends where there is no more than 80% of one variety. Excluding: Bordeaux or Rhone inspired blends.

6 | Organic, biodynamic and natural wines: We would like to show a range of wines under this theme to showcase the winemaking styles of this category. Kindly note that Organic wines will need to be defined as those certified by an approved certification agency as “organic” or “made from organic grapes” according to international legislation (in most cases this is EU or USDA).

7 | Liquid Gold We would like to focus on the sweet wines including categories: Noble late harvest, straw wine, late harvest, natural sweet and Muscadel.

8 | The Unusual For this theme we would like to highlight the new and rare non-traditional varieties being produced in South Africa. We would suggest that the wines be in their 1st, 2nd and 3rd commercial release.

9 | South Africa’s Ancient Soils With soils as old as time we would like to present a range of site specific wines based on soil type for example: Shale, Granite, Sandstone and Schist.

10 | Innovation through winemaking Wines made through innovation in both the vineyards and the cellar, bucking the stereotypical and the conventional. For example exploring non-conventional trellising, alternative maturation and vinification methods.

11 | Historical Revival: South Africa’s wine history dates over 350 years with winemakers now looking to the past and reviving some of the first planted grapes. For example: Semillon, Muscat, Cabernet Franc and Cinsaut.

The pods will be manned by experienced WOSA staff, which will be on hand to answer questions. A specialised printed and online catalogue will be developed listing all the necessary wine, contact and company information.
WINE SELECTION:
We are looking for the best examples to showcase and communicate the above highlighted themes. The wines will be selected through a thorough selection process. A wine can be entered across more than one theme. If needed, we will arrange for a blind tasting to determine the final wine selection. All wines will be approved by the WOSA board prior to final approval. You will receive the first round of feedback on your submission by the 4th of December 2015.
COST:
The cost of participation will be R1,500 per selected wine. This cost excludes that of 6 bottles (750ml) per each selected wine and the shipment. WOSA will consolidate the shipment and all wines for this area will be sent via the approved preferred supplier.
