The history of South Africa has resulted in many distortions in society and there are many complex socio-economic problems in the winelands. The wine industry is working to correct imbalances and move toward a more equitable society. An important agent for change is WIETA, and South Africa is the only wine industry in the world that has an independent organisation focusing exclusively on promoting ethical standards.
