Klawer Cellars Harvest Report: Week 1

Harvest 2012 is in full swing, with a hive of activities, tractors and harvest vehicles driving in and out the premises all day long!
 
At our Klawer premises, the first Pinotage grapes have been taken in on 19, 23 and 24 January. According to Mr. Lollie Lourens, new red winemaker, the grapes appear to be good and healthy. At first glance, the grapes appeared to have little juice in the granules, which is a very promising factor for colour and aroma in the wines.

Due to the fast ripening of the red cultivars, it is expected that the harvest will reach its peak during the next week.

Our winemaker at the Trawal Premises, Cerina van Niekerk, reports as follows:

"At Trawal our first Sauvignon Blanc grapes have already been take in early January. The 2012 season correspond with the 2010 harvest season, when mild climates were experienced during the grow period of the vines. The Sauvignon Blanc grapes, at present busy fermenting, are full of character and show great potential. Most of the Chardonnay grapes have already come in, and part of them will shortly begin the maturing process in oak barrels for the making of Birdfield Chardonnay wines. Due to apricot aromas and good concentration of the Viognier grapes taken in early last week, expectations are high of delivering a very special wine."
